If you need a new photo, you'll need to renew your driver's licence in person.
You'll need a new photo if:
- your last photo was taken more than 10 years ago, or
- you're renewing your licence for longer than your current photo is valid.
If you don't need a new photo, you can renew your licence online.
How to renew and get a new photo
- Step 1
Complete your renewal
Fill out the renewal form posted to you.
If you don't have your renewal form, download and print an application form (214.1 KB PDF) or complete it when you attend.
- Step 2
Attend a Service SA centre
Take your renewal form to a Service SA centre.
If you can't attend in person due to extenuating circumstances, you may be able to apply for a licence photo extension.
Calculate your renewal fee
A licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply if the licence has expired for more than 6 months.
There's no additional fee to have a new photo taken.
Reasons you can't renew your licence
You may not be able to renew your licence if:
- it has been expired for more than 5 years, or
- you're disqualified, suspended or otherwise prevented from holding or obtaining a driver's licence.
What happens next
When you renew, you'll receive a receipt and a temporary licence.
If you use the mySAGOV app, the new expiry date and photo will update on your digital licence straight away.
You should receive your licence card in the post within 3 weeks.
If you don't receive it within 3 weeks, phone Service SA on 13 10 84. If you don't contact Service SA within 30 days of renewing, you may need to pay a replacement fee.
Renewing early
A driver's licence is valid until midnight on the expiry date.
For example - if your licence expires on 26 June, you can drive up until midnight (11:59 pm) on 26 June.
If you renew before the expiry date, your new licence period will start the day after the existing expiry date.
Renewing late
You can still renew online if your licence has expired, as long as it hasn't been expired for more than 5 years.
If it has been expired for more than 6 months, a $31 re-establishment fee applies.
Renewing with concession
If you are eligible for a licence concession and it hasn't been applied to your renewal notice, check the Registration and licence concessions page for how to apply.
If your concession is already applied, it will be validated during the renewal process.
If your address changes
If your residential or postal address has changed, update your details with Service SA before renewing your licence.
