If you can't attend in person for a new photo to renew your driver's licence, you may be able to apply for a 12 month photo extension.
Apply online
You'll need:
- your licence or client number
- an Australian postal address for your photo licence card to be mailed to once you renew it (if the address is different from what is recorded on your licence record)
- a contact email address.
Reasons you can't apply
- You have been residing interstate for more than 3 months
- You have changed your residential address to an interstate address
- Your driver's licence has been expired for 6 months or longer
- You have outstanding fines or licence disqualifications
- You have already been granted a previous photo extension
- You have an overdue certificate of fitness
- You have been overseas for 12 months or longer and your licence has been expired for 6 months or longer.
If you are not eligible for a photo extension and genuinely cannot attend a Service SA centre or selected Australia Post outlet to have your photo taken, you may be able to apply for a photo kit.
What happens next
Once the extension for your photo has been approved, you'll:
- be advised by email
- check your junk or spam folder if you don't receive the email.
- need to renew your driver’s licence online.
You can only get one 12 month photo extension. For your next licence renewal, you'll need to attend in person for a new photo.
If you no longer live in South Australia, your SA driver's licence may no longer be valid. Contact the relevant local licensing authority for requirements on obtaining a driver’s licence.
