If you have a volunteer check and then move into paid employment where you work with children, you’ll need to upgrade your Working with Children Check (WWCC) and pay a fee.
You:
- only need to upgrade your check if the paid work is for 7 or more days a year
- must upgrade your WWCC within 28 days of starting paid employment.
Upgrade your check
To upgrade your check from volunteer to employee, login to your screening account and select the 'Upgrade' button next to your screening details. You won’t need to verify your ID again, but you'll need to pay the fee.
Fee to upgrade check
Volunteers moving into paid employment must pay a fee based on the time remaining on their current 5-year check.
The expiry date of your check will not change.
Time left on check | Fee |
|---|---|
Up to 12 months | $29 |
12 months to 2 years | $58 |
2 to 3 years | $87 |
3 to 4 years | $116 |
4 to 5 years | $145 |

This means:
- phone wait times are longer than usual
- enquiry response times are longer than usual
- application processing is taking longer than expected.
We understand your application is important and we appreciate your patience while we respond to enquiries as quickly as we can.
Before contacting us, please look at troubleshooting for screening applications.
Many common problems can be fixed without needing to call or email.
