Transfer a boat registration

When you buy a boat that is currently registered in SA, you must transfer the registration within 14 days.

There is a different process if you buy an unregistered boat.

Transfer online

You can transfer a boat registration online if you have a mySAGOV account.

You'll need:

  • the boat's SA registration number
  • the seller's SA driver's licence or client number
  • the seller's last name

Other ways to transfer your boat registration

You must:

  • hold an SA driver’s licence or client number
  • be transferring a boat registered in SA.

To transfer the remaining period of registration, the seller will need to provide the boat registration certificate to the new owner. This must be signed by both the seller and the new owner.

In person

Take the completed boat registration certificate to a Service SA centre and pay the transfer fee.

By post

Mail the completed registration certificate with the transfer fee. Payment is by cheque or money order only.
