To get your R-DATE licence, you will need to pass the:
- Motorbike Pre-Licence Course
- Motorbike Licence Assessment.
Each part includes different components and is booked and paid for separately.
The Motorbike Pre-licence Course is a half-day training session that includes a classroom session, an on-range component and an on-road component.
The course includes a practical assessment. During the session, you will learn advanced bike control skills with emphasis placed on road riding skills and traction theory.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18.5 years of age to pay for the course.
You must hold your R-DATE learner's permit to do the course.
Demand for Rider Safe courses is currently high
If there are no Rider Safe courses visible in the booking section of your mySAGOV account, all available courses are fully booked. Regularly check your account for new courses as they will become available on an ongoing basis.
Please don't phone Rider Safe or Service SA to book a course, as all bookings are managed online.
How to book
You can book into the course using your mySAGOV account. If you don’t already have a mySAGOV account, you can create a new account.

Course sessions
The course has two different session times that are available at the six different locations.
Both sessions run 7 days a week.
Morning session: 8:15am - 12:00pm
Afternoon session: 12:15pm - 4:00pm
You must arrive on time or you won't be able to take part in the course and you'll need to rebook. You may also be required to pay for the course in full again.
What to bring
You must bring the following items to participate. Otherwise, you'll need to rebook your session and may not receive a refund for your original booking.
You must bring:
- a fit for purpose, compliant helmet
- current photo identification
- your current motorbike learner's permit
- appropriate clothing - long sleeved top, full length pants, enclosed shoes (no sandals, thongs or heels).
You may use your own motorbike in the Motorbike Pre-Licence Course, as long as it is registered, roadworthy, not modified and on the list of learner-approved motorbikes. It must also have a minimum of a half tank of fuel.
If you don't want to use your own, a motorbike or scooter will be provided. However, certain types and models can't be guaranteed.
What the course involves
The course is run over half a day, either in the morning or the afternoon.
The course will include:
- a classroom session to talk about risky scenarios and the skills and techniques used to avoid these
- an on-range component to refresh safe riding skills and confirm that these are being applied
- an on-road component for instructors to observe and provide feedback to participants on safe-riding skills and techniques.
As part of this course, there are two assessment components:
- an on-range assessment that assess key riding skills that were learned in the Learners Course that demonstrate competence in riding a motorbike. You will need to pass this assessment to participate in the on-road component of the course.
- an on-road assessment to confirm that the skills learned in the previous courses have been retained, and to check whether you are ready to sit the Motorbike Licence Assessment.
Interpreters
You can ask for an interpreter to be at your course and assessment to provide information and instructions in your preferred language.
