Ending a registered relationship

Registering your relationship with Consumer and Business Services (CBS) means that your relationship is legally recognised. A registered relationship ends when one or both people in the relationship die or get married. One or both of the parties can also end the relationship by applying to revoke the registration.

As part of your application you must:

  • provide details about both people in the relationship
  • upload certified copies of two identity documents, one must show your name and address and the other must show your signature.

What happens next

We will send you:

  • a notice which must be served on the other party (if you're applying by yourself)
  • a statutory declaration, which must be signed in front of an authorised witness and then uploaded (instructions will be included).

Withdraw an application

Only the person who has lodged an application to revoke a registered relationship can withdraw the application.
