A light vehicle or its load that exceeds the dimensions outlined below will require an exemption (either a notice or a permit) to operate on roads in South Australia. A light vehicle is defined as a vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) up to 4.5 tonnes:
- a single motor vehicle that is not greater than 12.5 metres long
- a combination that is not greater than 19 metres long
- a vehicle that is not greater than 2.5 metres wide
- a vehicle that is not greater than 4.3 metres high.

Operators of heavy agricultural vehicles and combinations must comply with the requirements of the National Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle and Combination Mass and Dimension Exemption Notice and its accompanying Operator's Guide.
