Oversize light vehicles

A light vehicle or its load that exceeds the dimensions outlined below will require an exemption (either a notice or a permit) to operate on roads in South Australia. A light vehicle is defined as a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) up to 4.5 tonnes.

  • A single motor vehicle that is greater than 12.5 metres long
  • A combination that is not greater than 10 metres long
  • A vehicle that is not greater than 2.5m wide
  • A vehicle that is not greater than 4.3m high.

Note: Heavy vehicles may only use the Code of Practice for Oversize or Overmass Agricultural Vehicles if they are operating under the South Australia Class 1 Agricultural Vehicle Mass and Dimension Exemption Notice 2019 available from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
