New drivers

Who is this for

People aged at least 16 years who wish to obtain a South Australian driver’s licence and have never held a licence interstate or overseas.

What you need

Obtaining a driver’s licence involves gradually progressing through a series of stages until you are ready to graduate to a full licence.

You will need:

  1. An understanding of South Australian road rules and regulations.
  2. To book and pass a licence theory test. Full evidence of identity must be provided prior to sitting the test.
  3. To be issued a learner’s permit. If you are under 25 years of age, you must hold a learner’s permit for a minimum of 12 months.
  4. To complete compulsory driving hours and a practical driving test.
  5. To book and pass a compulsory hazard perception test.
  6. To be issued a provisional licence for three years (P1 for one year, P2 for two years).
  7. To be issued a South Australian driver’s licence.

Licence theory test

Licence theory tests can be completed at Service SA customer service centres.

Bookings are available between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and between 9.30 am and 4.00 pm Wednesdays (except public holidays).

Marion and Elizabeth customer service centres conduct testing until 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.

Regency Park customer service centre does not conduct theory testing.

Bookings are essential for theory tests. Payment must be made at the time of booking – phone 13 10 84.
