Applying for a licence
Who is this for
People aged at least 16 years who wish to obtain a South Australian driver’s licence and have never held an interstate or overseas licence.
What you'll need
You must obtain a learner's permit before you can become a fully licensed driver.
Learner's theory test
You must pass a Learner's Theory Test to obtain a learner's permit.
You should study South Australian road rules and regulations before you attempt the test. You may take the online practice theory test.
Booking a test
To book a learner's theory test, call Service SA on 13 10 84.
- Tests can be taken at any Service SA customer service centre, except Regency Park.
- Payment for the test must be made at the time of booking.

Marion and Elizabeth customer service centres conduct testing until 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.
Sitting the test
Full evidence of identity must be provided before sitting the test.
You will need to have your licence photo taken.
If you pass the test, you can apply for your learner's permit immediately. A fee applies. A temporary permit will be issued.
What happens next
Your photo learner's permit will be posted to you and is valid for two years.
You must hold a learner's permit for:
- at least 12 months if you are under 25
- at least 6 months if you are 25 or over.
You can then progress to P1 licence.
