Apply for a learner's permit
You must obtain a learner's permit before you can become a fully licensed driver. People aged at least 16 years are eligible to apply for a South Australian learner's permit.
How to apply
To apply for a learner's permit you'll need to:
Book a test
You can book for a test during COVID-19 restrictions but there may be limited times available.
To book, phone Service SA on 13 10 84:
- tests can be taken at any Service SA customer service centre except Regency Park and Mile End
- bookings can't be made more than 90 days in advance
- the relevant fee must be paid at the time of booking.
|Monday||9:00 am to 4:00 pm|
|Tuesday||9:00 am to 4:00 pm|
|Wednesday||9:30 am to 4:00 pm|
|Thursday||9:00 am to 4:00 pm|
|Friday||9:00 am to 4:00 pm|
Marion and Elizabeth customer service centres conduct testing until 5:00 pm Monday to Friday.
What happens next
When you pass the test, you can apply for your learner's permit immediately and a temporary permit will be issued. A learner's permit is valid for two years.
With a mySA GOV account, you can also store a legally-compliant digital permit using the mySA GOV app.
If you have not received your permit in the post within 21 days phone Service SA on 13 10 84. If you don't contact Service SA within 30 days of the original application you may need to pay a replacement fee.
You must hold a learner's permit for:
- at least 12 months if you are under 25
- at least 6 months if you are 25 or over.
You can then apply for your provisional licence.
