Reducing and eliminating restrictive practices

Meeting a person’s needs and supporting their participation is the key to an inclusive community. When we take these steps towards support and inclusion, we will decrease the use of restrictive practices.

The Restrictive Practice Authorisation scheme is based on:

  • person-centred practice
  • supporting human rights
  • raising awareness and educating about restrictive practices
  • clear rules about when restrictive practices can be authorised.

When people are well supported and are included, they can:

  • have their needs understood and met
  • participate in our shared community
  • have positive and meaningful relationships
  • work towards their goals.

Read more about approaches that reduce restrictive practices in the Restrictive Practices Guidelines.
