Community housing is for people on low incomes or moderate incomes. Tenants will usually struggle to access and maintain a home in the private market, or will have special needs.
Multiple household groups
There could be more than one household group when someone applies for community housing.
For example - A couple with a child and an elderly parent, who is financially independent. In this household, the couple and their child are considered to be one group. The elderly parent is another.
All household groups included on the registration form must be eligible in their own right.
For example - The couple and their child must be eligible for that household type. The elderly parent must be eligible as a single person.
If one of the household groups is not eligible, the person registering could:
- remove the group that isn't eligible from the registration form
- make sure the needs test is met by someone listed on the registration.
Other members of your household
If someone in the household - other than the person registering - is assessed as being in need, the household will be eligible in a higher category if they can show the person is:
- a relative
- living with them - for at least 12 months before registering
- required to live with them - eg bail conditions.
If the person in need doesn't normally live with this household or they leave, they can register in their own name. But they will need to show they can live independently.
