The closing of public roads and the opening of some public roads in South Australia is managed by local councils.
Refer to the Surveyor-General’s Guidelines (PDF 3.3 MB) to prepare and lodge applications to open and close roads.
People who are affected by a road opening or closure can lodge an objection or apply for easement rights as part of a 28-day public consultation process.
Make an objection or request easement rights
When making an objection or requesting easement rights to a road opening or closure, the following points must be adhered to:
- The objection or request for easement rights must be in writing including two copies:
- a copy addressed to the applicable council (or the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) where the road closure is associated with a SCAP development)
- forward a courtesy copy to the Surveyor-General at DHUD.RoadOpeningClosing@sa.gov.au or GPO Box 1815, Adelaide SA 5001.
- The objection or request for easement rights must state the name and address of the person making the objection.
- Specify how the road opening or closure impacts upon the person making the objection.
- Any objection must be received by the council and Surveyor-General within 28 days of the public notice being published in the Government Gazette.
