Light vehicle modifications for people with disabilities

Drivers or passengers with disabilities may require specific modifications to their vehicle for safe driving or travel. These modifications can vary from a simple addition of a steering wheel spinner knob to major modifications to the vehicle body structure. The following information outlines the essential requirements for different types of modifications. Such modifications will require completing an application for miscellaneous vehicle standards exemption form.

When modifying the structure of the vehicle, you will need to complete application to modify the vehicle.

Refer to Seat belts and child restraints for detailed information on using an appropriate child restraint or booster seat.

Only the nominated person is allowed to use these equipment/ modifications. The vehicle is to be restored to its original condition when sold or disposed of. Please note if the special equipment used is in conjunction with existing equipment in the vehicle without affecting their function or interfering with other systems such as airbags, vehicle standards exemption is not required.

Where modification to suit people with disabilities is not listed below, contact Vehicle Standards before making modifications.

Hand control substituting foot pedal

Most light motor vehicles with an automatic transmission have an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal in the footwell. Due to their medical conditions, some drivers may have difficulties using the brake pedals and accelerators. Hand controls may be a feasible option instead of controlling the pedals by foot. The hand control must be securely installed in the vehicle per the manufacturer's instructions.

Spinner knobs

A spinner knob is attached to the steering wheel to allow the driver to steer with one hand. The spinner knob must be of a quick-release and securely installed as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Altering or removing airbags

The removal of airbags is not permitted as it will affect the safety of the occupants. If removal/ disabling of the airbags needs to be considered under exceptional circumstances, contact Vehicle Standards to discuss the requirement and proposal before making any modifications.
