Special purpose vehicles - eg cranes and certain front-end loaders, may require an inspection before they can be registered.
Inspections help to ensure:
- vehicles are within legal mass and dimension limits
- roads and structures can withstand the load these vehicles place on them, reducing damage to infrastructure.
Inspection can also be at the request of NHVR or other state government agencies.
Registration is not a permit to access the road network. For permit-related enquiries contact the NHVR.
Apply for a special purpose vehicle inspection
You'll need to provide vehicle details, specifications, and photographs.
What you'll need
You will need to provide:
- customer/registered owner client number (Contact Service SA if you need assistance in obtaining a client number)
- customer/registered owner contact details
- contact details of the person organising the inspection and paying the inspection fee
- vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number
- vehicle make, model and year of manufacture
- vehicle dimensions and axle spacings
- pictures of the special purpose vehicle showing the complete vehicle with any attachments/equipment, as it will be travelling on the road
- vehicle diagram showing dimensions (if available)
- vehicle specification sheet (if available)
What happens next
It may take up to three business days for Vehicle Standards to review your application.
Once it has been determined that you need an inspection:
- Our bookings team will contact you to organise payment of the inspection fee
- Our inspections team will contact you to organise an inspection time and date at your site.
