Service SA can release, on request, limited information about motor vehicles. While basic information may be given out by phone, most requests for vehicle information are required in writing.
Basic information
Information that can be released over the phone to a third party or registered owner (by confirmation or denial) includes:
- vehicle registration status
- if a vehicle was previously or currently written-off
- if a vehicle is recorded as stolen
- if a vehicle is currently subject to any outstanding defect notices.

Detailed information
Specific information about a vehicle can be released by lodging an application at Service SA.
The registered owner of a vehicle can request information regarding their vehicle, however the information released will only incorporate the date range they were the registered owner.
Other information may only be given out if additional requirements are met.
Notice of disposal details
Notice of disposal details are only available to the registered owner/s that disposed of the vehicle.
Vehicles registered to deceased persons
If information is required regarding a vehicle that was registered to a deceased person, evidence of a will or court order is required for information to be released.
Vehicles registered to companies
If a vehicle is registered to a company, information can only be released to a director of that company. Evidence of directorship is required such as an ASIC extract.
How to apply
Complete an MR1415 Application for Vehicle/Client Information (183.1 KB PDF) and submit the application form at a Service SA Customer Service Centre.
Fees
A fee of $31 must be paid.
Insurance letter requests
There are circumstances where an insurance premium of a vehicle continues to be paid after the date of disposal. If you require a letter for your insurance company stating the date of disposal of your vehicle, log in to your mySAGOV account and order the letter online.
The document will be available as a PDF for printing once payment has been made, or alternatively you can request for this to be posted to you.
