The Heavy Vehicle – Road Operations Access Map ('HV-ROAM') displays a variety of information on the South Australian road network to inform heavy vehicle operators prior to commencing their journey.
HV-ROAM displays the following:
- height restrictions on and under structures, including a combination height filter
- steep descents in South Australia
- points, roads, and zones where there are dimensional limitations (height, width and length)
- locations where a pilot escort is required
- pilot and marshalling locations, zones of operation, and network access notes to assist oversize overmass (OSOM) operators
- Traffic SA data
- railways and level crossing locations
- train and tram overhead wire locations
- locations of signage that affects heavy vehicle access
- SA Power Network (SAPN) wire locations
- rest area locations
HV-ROAM also provides access to key resources such as:
- the Escorting Guidelines for oversize and mass vehicles in South Australia
- SAPN’s Transporting high loads (SAPN) webpage
- NHVR’s National and South Australian Notices webpage
- NHVR’s Heavy Vehicle National Law and its Regulations webpage
- SAPOL’s escorting unit contact details
The information displayed on the map is indicative and subject to change. Other restrictions may exist, particularly on council maintained or private roads as well infrastructure owned by third parties (such as telecommunication lines, rail infrastructure, or level crossings).
Please note that the restrictions displayed are generally limited to the state-maintained road network. For more information see the disclaimer pop-up when entering the map.
Height restriction on structure
'Height Restriction On Structure' means the clearance height from the road surface to any overhead gantry or arch on a road or bridge.
Figure 1: Height On example
Height restriction under structure
'Height Restriction Under Structure' means the clearance height from the road surface to the lowest part of a bridge, sign or gantry over a road, or through a tunnel.
To note, when a structure has a height clearance of less than 5m, in most instances a sign is affixed to the structure. This sign identifies the clearance height of this particular structure.

Figure 3: Height Under a sign example
Combination height filter
‘Height Restriction On Structures’ and ‘Height Restriction Under Structures’ data can be filtered based on your combination height. For example, should you select a combination height of 4.6m, height restrictions on/under structures equal to or less than 4.6m will display.
Steep descents in South Australia
All road users, including truck and bus drivers and their organisations, are reminded that travelling on the South Eastern Freeway into Adelaide requires additional road safety awareness, decision-making and actions.
Truck and bus drivers should plan their travel down the South Eastern Freeway descent between Crafers to the Glen Osmond intersection, in advance. This is to familiarise themselves with the road and the safe driving requirements.
A new on-line visual aid for truck and bus drivers and organisations is available here (high definition) and in Figure 4 below.
This visual aid helps inform heavy vehicle operators of key landmarks and safety features along the descent to contribute to a safer journey. Importantly, this aid was developed with the input of key industry stakeholders.

Refresh your steep descent knowledge via:
- Heavy vehicles on the South Eastern Freeway - SA.GOV.AU
- Heavy vehicle road safety on the South Eastern Freeway Road safety - Department for Infrastructure and Transport - South Australia
Operators are reminded that there is no cost to use the safety ramps in the event that you lose control or have doubts about arriving at the major intersection safely.
Access information
Limited dimensional access
Limited dimensional access locations are zones, points or roads where a maximum height, width or length restriction is in place. These locations are displayed.
Pilot escort points
Within South Australia there are specified structures which require a police escort due to the limited dimension(s) of a structure. These locations are displayed.
Pilot pick-up and drop-off sites
Pilot pick-up and drop-off sites on the map are the locations as described in the Escorting Guidelines for oversize and mass vehicles In South Australia.
A pilot vehicle is a motor vehicle that accompanies an oversize vehicle to warn other road users of the oversize vehicle’s presence.
An escort vehicle is a pilot vehicle driven by a South Australian police officer or another person authorised to direct traffic under an Australian Road Law.
A Pilot 'pick-up' and 'drop-off' site cannot be used if an escort vehicle is required to accompany an oversize load. If an escort vehicle is required, operators are required to use the designated marshalling sites.
Marshalling sites
Marshalling sites on the map are the locations as described in the Escorting Guidelines for oversize and mass vehicles In South Australia.
Marshalling sites are the designated locations for instances when an oversize load requires an escort vehicle.
Zones
Zones are displayed on the map to assist class 1 and 3 heavy vehicle operators to comply with the required pilot and escort requirements when travelling in South Australia. There are three zones of operation:
- Adelaide Metropolitan zone
- Adelaide Hills zone
- SA country zone
Note that the ‘SA country area’ is any unshaded area on the map.
Network Access Notes
Network access notes provide operators with further information regarding a location. In most instances, these points, roads and zones relate to an established over dimensional route (‘OD Route’) or where there are specific conditions on travel along a road corridor.
Ancillary information
The Ancillary Information tab provides operators with information which may inform access planning, including information from third parties.
Traffic SA
Traffic SA displays roadworks, incidents and planned events in South Australia. HV-ROAM displays all Traffic SA data.
Railways
Within South Australia there are several railways. These locations are displayed.
Train and tram overhead wires
Some trains and trams in South Australia require overhead wires to operate. Each wire has a minimum height so that a vehicle can safely pass underneath. These locations are displayed.
Level crossings
There are a variety of locations where a railway crosses a road, at the same level, these are defined as ‘level crossings’. These locations are displayed.
Steep Descents
Four steep descents have been spatially displayed on the map:
- The South Eastern Freeway
- The Southern Expressway
- Main South Road
- Ocean Boulevard/Brighton Road
Signage which affects heavy vehicle access
There are a variety of locations across the state-maintained road network where heavy vehicle access is affected. These locations contain signs advising heavy vehicle operators of restrictions, detours or where heavy vehicle access is prohibited.
Signs on the map have been grouped into four categories:
- Mass restrictions restricting heavy vehicle access
- Dimensional restrictions restricting heavy vehicle access
- Heavy vehicle access is detoured
- Heavy vehicle access is prohibited
SA Power Network (SAPN) wires
Electricity wires owned by SAPN can be found across the road network in South Australia. These wires are displayed.
Please be advised that this layer may take several minutes to populate due to the large quantity of wires.
Rest Areas
Within South Australia there are several state-maintained rest areas. These locations are displayed.
