If the rear number plate of your vehicle is obscured by a bike rack, you'll need to fit a bike rack plate to ensure the plate number can be seen clearly.
This is a smaller copy of your existing SA issued number plate and will have black characters on a white reflective background.

You'll need your:
- licence or client number
- plate number.

What happens next
If your plates are posted
- Your plates should arrive in approximately 15 working days.
Picking up plates from Service SA
- Plates will be ready to pick up in approximately 10 working days.
- Someone else can pick up the plates for you, if they have a digital or paper copy of the tax invoice.
How to display a bike rack plate
You'll need to either:
- display the bike rack number plate on the rack, or
- take the rear number plate off the motor vehicle and attach it to the bicycle rack.
Note: When carrying bikes, your vehicle brake lights must be visible from 200 metres away - under normal weather conditions. If it's not visible from 200 metres, you must attach an additional brake light to the rack.
Don't
You must not:
- cover the rear number plate of the vehicle.
- display a standard number plate on both the rear of the vehicle and on a bicycle rack.
- use homemade number plates.
