Easy Read information

This guide uses simple words and pictures to explain information. This makes information easier to understand.

This guide has some hard words. The word will be written in bold.

We explain what the hard word means.

This guide is written by the Restrictive Practices Unit.

The Restrictive Practices Unit are people in Government who make sure that laws for restrictive practices are followed.

Restrictive practices stop you doing what you want and can take away your rights.

Please read the What is a restrictive practice Easy Read guide for more detail.

What is consultation?

People with disability have a right to make decisions about their lives.

People with disability have a right to having their views heard and respected.

There are rules about how restrictive practices can be used.

One of the rules says people who have a disability must be consulted about the restrictive practices used for them.

Consultation can be someone:

  • Helping you to understand what restrictive practices are being used for you.
  • Asking if you like the restrictive practice or not.
  • Asking how the restrictive practice makes you feel.
  • Asking if you have a better idea for supporting you without using the restrictive practice.
  • Using your ideas to change the way that carers support you.
  • Writing your feelings and ideas in a behaviour support plan.

A behaviour support plan describes:

  • Where you live.
  • The things you like and do not like.
  • Ways to help when things are not going well.

There is another Easy Read about behaviour support plans. Please read this if you want to know more about behaviour support plans.
