While minors are permitted in most areas of a licensed hotel or club in South Australia, it is against the law for a minor:
- to enter or remain in a gaming area
- operate a gaming machine on licensed premises.
This includes walking through a gaming area to access other areas of a venue such as a dining area or toilets.
It is also against the law for a person to knowingly assist or enable a minor (including infants) to enter or remain in a gaming area.
Venue requirements
The Gaming machine gambling code of practice (PDF) outlines the required signage licensed venues must have in place.
At the entry to a gaming area there must be signage advising that penalties apply if a minor enters the gaming area.
The Code of Practice also requires that a licensee must have current written procedures to address the issue of young children that might be left unattended on the premises or carpark.
Refusal to pay winnings
If a minor operates a gaming machine, they are not entitled to any winnings.
Those winnings are forfeited to the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for payment into the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund.
