Disputes, termination or variation

Apprenticeships and traineeships include a probationary period. After that period a training contract can only be terminated if all parties agree.

Probationary period

All training contracts include a probationary period, which varies according to the length of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

During the probationary period, either party can withdraw from the contract but must inform the Department for Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS).

An apprentice or a trainee can't be dismissed once the probationary period has expired. The training contract can be transferred, suspended, terminated or varied with the agreement of all parties.
