Undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship allows you to learn real skills in the workplace, become qualified in a trade or vocation and be paid a wage while you're learning.
You’ll enter into a training contract with an employer and a training provider that will allow you to combine hands-on training in the workplace with off-job study in a classroom or workshop.
Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time or part-time and even started while you're at school.

School-based apprenticeships
You can start a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship while you're still in school. You'll attend school part of the week, work part-time and study with your training provider as well.
You can study:
- Pre-apprenticeship and pre-vocational courses to give you a taste of a career and gain valuable experience before starting a full apprenticeship or traineeship
- School-based apprenticeship or traineeship if you're in years 10, 11 or 12.
Enrolling in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship has a number of benefits including starting your training while also completing your SACE, earning money while you learn, and gaining experience in the trade or vocation of your choice.
Like regular apprentices and trainees, you'll need to sign a training contract with an employer and a training provider.
For more information, speak to your school's VET Coordinator.
