An apprentice can get a trade certificate (and in some cases a licence) after completing their training contract.
A training contract is completed when all parties agree that competency in the workplace has been achieved, and the training organisation has certified that the qualification specified in the training contract has been successfully completed. At this time you should receive a trade certificate, which will allow you to be paid at the full rate for your trade.
Your employer may also be able to claim an incentive payment from the Australian Government once the trade certificate has been issued.
An employer who wants to terminate the employment of an apprentice once they complete their training contract, must give them advance notice before the completion date in accordance with the relevant industrial arrangement. After the completion date of the training contract, apprentices are deemed to be permanent employees.
