Approved areas or routes

Vehicles operating under a mass or dimension exemption (notice or permit) in South Australia must travel within stated areas and on stated routes.

Heavy vehicle route networks

From 20 December 2023, all South Australian heavy vehicle maps will be published by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) through the National Network Map. The National Network Map is the authoritative location for the heavy vehicle industry to plan journeys within and across participating Australian states and territories.

This NHVR-led initiative aims to improve heavy vehicle access efficiency and decision-making by bringing together the state-based heavy vehicle networks and displaying them in 1 location.

The interactive mapping system allows you to see what conditions and restrictions apply across the country. Further information about the map can be found on the National Network Map Fact Sheet.

Help and support will be available on the National Network Map, including video tutorials and an in-system tour of features.

The NHVR team will be available to answer any questions, capture your feedback and respond to any issues. The NHVR team can be contacted through:

For a short time, you can still revert to the RAVnet mapping system if you experience any issues with the National Network Map.

Restricted areas within SA

Route and structure restrictions are published in the:

Information Bulletin - Consolidated Table of Limited Access Locations in SA (163.3 KB PDF).

Height Clearance Map - State Roads

DIT has also developed a map that displays height restrictions on all state-maintained roads.

Clearances beneath bridges, gantries, and overhead walkways, as well as through the Heysen Tunnels, are shown as colour-coded dots and in most cases, the height in metres is displayed on the marker.  Click on the dots in the map for further information.

When operating an oversize vehicle, the maps below depict the principal routes for travel. If your operating requirements cannot be met by a gazette notice, you will need to apply for a permit.

Temporary road closures, detours and roadworks

Refer to daily roadworks, hazards and news for information.
