A justice of the peace (JP) acts as an independent and objective witness to documents people use for official or legal purposes. For example, a JP may:
- certify a true copy of an original document
- certify a person's identity
- witness an affidavit for use in court
- witness a statutory declaration
- witness the signing of a document.
Other places to find a JP
Consumer and Business Services (CBS)
CBS provides a free, in-person JP service from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.

Local libraries
Most libraries offer JP services throughout the week. Check your local council's website for details.
State electorate offices
The South Australian Parliament website has electorate office addresses and phone numbers. Contact your local office to make sure a JP is available.
Other authorised witnesses
In addition to JPs, there are other categories of people who can legally witness statutory declarations, such as government employees, accountants, religious ministers, medical professionals and bank officers who meet the criteria.

Remote witnessing
JPs in SA can witness the following documents remotely online in real time:
- SA Affidavits
- Statutory Declarations (including Commonwealth Statutory Declarations)
You can use an audiovisual link such as Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Facetime, or the Royal Association of Justices of SA Inc (RAJSA) free virtual online witnessing service.
Make an appointment for remote document witnessing
All other documents must still be witnessed in person, such as:
- certifying copies of original documents
- witnessing Enduring Powers of Attorney documents
- Advance Care Directives.
