Where to get free legal advice

Several organisations provide or organise free legal help. If a matter goes beyond advice and minor assistance, there may be a cost involved, or you may need to meet eligibility criteria (usually a means test) to avoid or reduce this cost.

  • Legal Services Commission of South Australia (LSC) provides legal services for people who can't afford to pay for legal representation.

  • Community Legal Centres SA provide legal advice, assistance and referral to community members who might not otherwise get the help they need. Most centres provide services free of charge.

  • Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement provides legal assistance to Aboriginal people across South Australia.
    Phone: 1800 643 222
  • Uniting Communities provides information, advice and representation on social security matters, including Centrelink and appeals in the Administrative Appeal Tribunal. This service is available to people on a government benefit, living in South Australia, and aged 15 and over.

  • Women's Legal Service is a community-based legal centre that provides free and confidential legal services to women in South Australia.

  • JusticeNet SA coordinates pro bono (free) legal assistance to low-income and disadvantaged South Australians, as well as not-for-profit organisations.
