Bag check policy

If a business displays a sign at the entrance of their premises, or advises you in some way of their bag checking policy, they can ask to look inside your bags without touching any of your belongings.

If something inside your bag is blocking their view, they can ask you to shift the contents around but they can't reach in and do it themselves.

You have the right to refuse to allow a bag inspection. In these situations, the business may:

  • ask you to leave the store
  • refuse to sell you any goods
  • call the police if they believe you've been shoplifting.
