A caravan becomes a building if it is fixed to the land.
Planning or building approval is not required for temporary caravan accommodation where:
- a dwelling, or part of a dwelling, has been destroyed or significantly damaged by a bushfire
- the caravan is to be used by the owner of the land for a period not exceeding 2 years.
Where a caravan is used as temporary accommodation:
- it should be fitted with a working smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher
- you should contact your local council about any public and environmental health requirements
- you should have a bushfire survival plan, which includes leaving early on days of heightened fire danger or when there is a bushfire in the area
- approval may need to be sought from an easement beneficiary to carry out works within an easement.
