Temporary caravan accommodation checklist

A caravan becomes a building if it is fixed to the land.

Planning or building approval is not required for temporary caravan accommodation where:

  • a dwelling, or part of a dwelling, has been destroyed or significantly damaged by a bushfire
  • the caravan is to be used by the owner of the land for a period not exceeding 2 years.

Where a caravan is used as temporary accommodation:

  • it should be fitted with a working smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher
  • you should contact your local council about any public and environmental health requirements
  • you should have a bushfire survival plan, which includes leaving early on days of heightened fire danger or when there is a bushfire in the area
  • approval may need to be sought from an easement beneficiary to carry out works within an easement.
