Place and area overlays
- State heritage place and area overlays:
- protects the over 2,300 individual state heritage places
- protects all 17 state heritage areas
- provides demolition control
- includes a referral to the Heritage Minister, who can direct decisions – for example, a refusal to develop or demolish.
- Local heritage place overlay:
- protects over 7,200 local heritage places
- provides demolition control.
- Heritage adjacency overlay:
- provides rules to make sure any development next to a state or local heritage place do not affect it
- includes a referral to the Heritage Minister in cases where development could materially affect a state heritage place.
- Historic area overlay:
- protects areas of historic character and includes most of the ‘representative buildings’
- provides demolition control
- makes sure historic context can be considered when development is carried out.
- Character area overlay:
- protects neighbourhoods and streetscapes of character
- makes sure historic context can be considered when development is carried out.
