Housing SA may make the modifications to your public housing home free of charge if you or someone in your household has a disability.
Minor modifications
Minor modifications are small and don't change the structure of the property, these may include:
- grab rails
- lever taps
- sensor lights.
Major modifications
Major modifications change the structure of a property and may include:
- outside ramps
- lowering of kitchen benches or cupboards
- removal of a bath.
Who can apply
A tenant living in housing managed by Housing SA.
The modifications must be:
- essential to help you or another occupant to live at home. A health professional must confirm it.
- suitable for your home and no other agency is responsible for making the modifications, for example the National Disability Insurance Agency.
How to apply
1. Complete the form

2. Contact your health professional
Ask your doctor, occupational therapist or physiotherapist to complete the health professional section of the form.
3. Return the form
Return your completed form to Housing SA.
What happens next
You will get a letter telling you the outcome of your application.
You may be asked to provide more information.
Housing SA may need to inspect your home to make sure the modifications can be made.
If modifications can’t be made, Housing SA might suggest that you transfer to a more suitable home. Housing SA will pay for electricity, gas or phone to be connected, mail redirection and reasonable removal expenses.
