Accessibility modifications to private rental properties

Tenants can ask their landlord or agent for permission to make minor alterations or safety modifications to a rented home. The changes must not significantly affect the building’s structure.

Consent must be received in writing.

A landlord or agent cannot withhold consent for reasonable changes necessary for disability assistance, mobility or access relating to age or if the changes involve minor alterations or additions.

Unless otherwise agreed, the tenant must pay for any alteration or addition to the premises and return it to its former state at the end of the tenancy.
