Gas work you can do yourself

If you have the skills, you can connect or disconnect a gas cylinder and portable equipment that uses the cylinder. For example, a BBQ or patio heater.

Never use outdoor gas equipment indoors.

When to call a gas fitter

By law, you must use a licensed gas fitter for any work between the property’s gas meter outlet or LPG gas supply and:

  • the gas appliance
  • pipework to the appliance
  • any flues and ducts.

If you are not sure, contact the Office of the Technical Regulator.

Signs of danger

Turn off your gas supply and call a licensed gas fitter at once if you see:

  • the appliance burning incorrectly - for example, yellow or uneven flames, pungent odours, black carbon soot
  • the appliance going out regularly
  • visible damage to gas pipes.

If you can smell gas outside your property, phone 1800 427 532 to report it.
