As most native animals are protected, the use of - or interactions with - native and some non-native animals must comply with relevant laws and a permit may be required.
Permits are required to:
- Keep, sell or display native animals as pets, as a fauna dealer, for educational or scientific purposes or for biological products
- Recreationally hunt feral animals or specific native bird species during an open season
- Destroy, trap or capture and release wildlife to reduce impacts to people, property infrastructure or the animal itself
- Rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured or orphaned wildlife for release
- Harvest kangaroos for meat and skin production
- Move native animals to, or from, South Australia and another state/territory
- Take native animal from the wild as part of a conservation project or for captive purposes
- Farm emus for meat, eggs or other products
- Collect seeds, fruit or cuttings for plant propagation and bushfoods from public land.
