Animal licences and permits

As most native animals are protected, the use of - or interactions with - native and some non-native animals must comply with relevant laws and a permit may be required.

Permits are required to:

  • Keep, sell or display native animals as pets, as a fauna dealer, for educational or scientific purposes or for biological products
  • Recreationally hunt feral animals or specific native bird species during an open season
  • Destroy, trap or capture and release wildlife to reduce impacts to people, property infrastructure or the animal itself
  • Rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured or orphaned wildlife for release
  • Harvest kangaroos for meat and skin production
  • Move native animals to, or from, South Australia and another state/territory
  • Take native animal from the wild as part of a conservation project or for captive purposes
  • Farm emus for meat, eggs or other products
  • Collect seeds, fruit or cuttings for plant propagation and bushfoods from public land.
