Disaster recovery assistance
Following a disaster, government and non-government agencies and the general public assist affected communities in the reconstruction and restoration of the social, economic, built and natural environments.
State government assistance
The State Recovery Office, part of the Department of Human Services (DHS), coordinates state disaster recovery operations in South Australia.
The SA Housing Authority provides information and support services such as food, financial assistance and emergency accommodation.
The St Vincent de Paul Society has been appointed by the State Recovery Office to administer, manage and distribute donated goods - eg clothing, furniture and household goods - during and after an emergency.
Australian government assistance
The Australian government Disaster Assist website provides information on financial and other assistance available to eligible disaster-declared areas and individuals through:
- the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements
- Disaster Recovery Payment
- Disaster Recovery Allowance.
Money collected by the state government in a public appeal for disaster relief is paid into the State Emergency Relief Fund (SERF), which is independent of government.
The fund is administrated by the SERF Committee which ensures publicly donated money is distributed appropriately and fairly to people and communities affected by the disaster.
Other financial aid
Depending on the scale of the disaster, it is likely that a range of non-government organisations will provide financial assistance to families in need. Details and eligibility requirements will be advertised at the time.
Emergency financial aid may also be available for individuals or families experiencing financial stress.
