If you're enrolling your child at child care, preschool or school you must provide emergency contact information and details of any medical condition that may require intervention at school.
Emergency contact information
Make sure you provide emergency contact details during the enrolment process. Inform the school immediately of any change in:
- emergency contact people
- your contact details
- medical condition of your child.
Unwell students
If your child is showing any signs of illness, keep them home for the day.
Children who have diarrhoea or are vomiting must be kept home for 24 hours after the last episode.
If a child becomes sick at child care or pre-school, the parents or emergency contact carers will be phoned to collect the child.
In schools, the class teacher will generally assess the child's wellbeing first before contacting a parent or carer.
First aid
First aid support is provided in response to unpredictable illness, allergic reaction or injury to:
- preserve life
- protect the person, particularly if they are unconscious
- prevent a condition worsening
- promote recovery.
If your child has or develops a health condition (eg severe allergy, epilepsy, asthma) it's important that you inform school staff immediately so that an agreed plan of action can be put in place in the event of an emergency.
Medical emergencies
In medical emergencies an ambulance will be called and a
parent or carer contacted.
Staff do not have to wait for parent approval before taking this emergency
action as delays could compromise safety. This emergency response is part of
their first aid training.
