Deaf and hard of hearing - support for school children

Students with hearing loss, as well as their parents and teachers, can make use of specialist support services and resources. These are available from the age of diagnosis to the end of secondary school.

Individual amplification devices, including hearing aids, are available through Hearing Australia until the age of 26.

How to arrange support services

  1. Discuss any concerns around your child’s hearing loss with your school.
  2. The school will consult with a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing from the Department for Education’s Student Support Services about a referral to support services.
  3. Where they determine a referral is required, the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing contacts you (the parents or guardians) and asks for your consent for the support services.
  4. The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing works with you and your school to arrange the services needed.
  5. Your school develops a personalised learning plan that details the support and adjustments needed and the responsibilities of each party. They’ll do this with input from:
    • your child (the student)
    • you (the parents or guardians)
    • allied health professionals
    • a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
