Secure vehicle identification marking exemption

A secure vehicle identification marking (SVIM) label is required on vehicles and trailers supplied to the market under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018.

An exemption is required where an SVIM label is missing or damaged.

The exemption from the fitting of a SVIM label to a left-hand drive vehicle is already covered under the process in left-hand drive vehicles. You do not need to apply for the exemption separately.

What happens next

It may take up to five business days from receipt of all the relevant information for Vehicle Standards to review your application and provide advice back to you.

You will receive a Statement of Requirements outlining the next steps, which may include an identity inspection and roadworthiness inspection for the vehicle.

Once the vehicle has passed these inspections, a certificate of exemption for not displaying an SVIM will be issued.
