A street rod vehicle is a vehicle that has been modified for safe use on roads that:
- has a body and frame manufactured before 1949, or
- is a replica of a vehicle whose body and frame were built before 1949.
However, street rods are custom vehicles that do not comply with vehicle standards.
You need to apply to build a street rod to be granted an exemption from these rules and apply for registration.
For your application to be successful, your street rod must be built or modified according to acceptable standards, such as those in the Street rod manual (National Guidelines for the Construction and Modification of Street Rods in Australia).

You'll need to provide documentation and detailed information about the vehicle.
What you'll need
You will need to supply information about the vehicle, including details on:
- chassis/body
- wheels and tyres
- axles, suspension, and cross members
- brakes
- engine and transmission
- steering
- seatbelts.
As part of the application you may need to provide:
- an engineering report, if not submitting your application through the Australian Street Rod Federation
- proof of full registration, not club registration, if previously issued in another state
- import papers, where applicable
- pictures of the vehicle.
What happens next
It may take up to 10 business days from receipt of all the relevant information for Vehicle Standards to review your application and provide feedback to you.
