Motor vehicle modifications are regulated to ensure vehicles are safe and comply with the Road Traffic Act and Australian Design Rules.
Where a rally car deviates from the appropriate standards, an exemption must be granted before the vehicle can be given conditional registration for use in rally car events.

You'll need to provide details about the vehicle.
What you'll need
You will need to supply information about the vehicle, including details on:
- chassis/body
- wheels and tyres
- axles, suspension, and cross members
- brakes
- engine and transmission
- emissions
- steering
- seatbelts.
As part of the application you will need to upload:
- an engineering report
- proof of registration
- import papers, where applicable
- inspection reports
- pictures of the vehicle.
What happens next
It may take up to 15 business days for Vehicle Standards to review your application and respond to you.
If the proposal is acceptable, Vehicle Standards will issue a Statement of Requirements (SOR).
If the proposal is not acceptable, or if additional information is required before a SOR can be considered, Vehicle Standards will contact you.
Once you receive a SOR, evidence of compliance with the information requested in the SOR must be prepared by a light vehicle engineering signatory and must be lodged at least 5 working days prior to the inspection of the vehicle.
You will need to book a vehicle inspection. You should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the inspection so the necessary paperwork, including the SOR, can be checked and any fees paid.
If the vehicle passes inspection, it can be registered.
If the vehicle fails the inspection, any faults will need to be rectified and another inspection will be needed.
