When you sell, gift or dispose of an SA registered vehicle — such as a car, trailer, caravan or motorcycle — you must submit a notice of disposal (NOD).
There is a different process if you are the buyer of a vehicle.
After selling a vehicle, submit a NOD as soon as possible to:
- notify Service SA that you are no longer the current owner of the vehicle
- avoid being held responsible for the buyer's parking or driving offences
- stop future direct debit payments.
Circumstances where you can't submit a NOD online - for example, the vehicle has been sold to a buyer from interstate or taken to a wrecking yard.
Submit online
You can submit a NOD online if you have a mySAGOV account.
There is no fee to submit a NOD.
You'll need:
- the details of the sale - eg date and time of sale and selling price
- the buyer's SA driver's licence or client number
- the buyer's name.
Reasons you can't submit online
To submit a notice of disposal online you must have a mySAGOV account.
Submitting a NOD online isn't available if:
- the buyer does not have an SA driver's licence or client number - eg the vehicle was sold to a buyer from interstate or to a wrecking yard
- you don't have all the buyer's details.

Transfer of remaining registration
When you sell a vehicle, you may agree with the buyer that they can transfer the remaining registration into their name.
There may be instances where the remaining registration cannot be transferred into the new owner's name - eg the vehicle was sold to a buyer from interstate (they need to apply for new registration in their state) or the vehicle has been taken to a wrecking yard.
If the registration cannot be transferred, you may choose to cancel the registration and claim a refund (if applicable). Service SA recommend doing this after you have submitted your NOD and that you advise the buyer that the vehicle will be unregistered.
Special number plates
If you have special plates and want to keep them, you'll need to visit a Service SA centre to get new standard number plates before you sell your vehicle. New standard plates cost $63. An old set of number plates that you might still have cannot be used and must be surrendered to Service SA.
If you would like to move your special plate onto a different vehicle registered in your name, a reallocation fee of $31 will also apply.
