A client number is required to register a vehicle in South Australia.
Who is this for
These body corporates are eligible to apply for a client number:
- companies (businesses that only have an Australian Business Number are unable to apply)
- government authorities and departments
- church or religious organisations
- sporting clubs, non-profit organisations
- co-operative societies
- state schools
- private schools
- solicitors.
How to apply for a client number
To apply for a client number:
- complete the application for a client number form(162.4 KB PDF)
- provide evidence of identity and proof of business address - see What you need
- provide written authorisation on company letterhead for the applicant to conduct business on behalf of the company
- take the form and documentation to a Service SA customer service centre.
What you need
Evidence of business address
All applicants must provide evidence of a business address that shows the body corporate name. These documents are accepted:
- contract of purchase, current lease or rental document for the business premises
- current council rates notice
- current land tax evaluation notice
- utilities notice (up to 12 months old)
- telephone, gas or electricity bill (up to six months old)
- water rates notice (up to 12 months old)
- quarterly or yearly Business Activity Statement or Instalment Activity Statement issued by the Australian Tax Office (up to 12 months old)
- Australian Taxation Office business portal client details web page with correct registered address.
Evidence of identity
Identity requirements vary depending on the type of body corporate applying.
Companies
One of these:
- extract from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) website
- certificate of registration with ACN
- current ASIC extract of the company with ACN
- company statement issued by ASIC (up to 12 months old)
- certificate of registration of a foreign company with Australian Registered Body Number.
If an extract from the ASIC website is provided and lists the current business address, a separate evidence of address document is not required.
Government authorities and departments
Authorisation on letterhead approving registration of a vehicle - the Act under which the authority or department was established must be quoted.
Church or religious organisations
- Authorisation on letterhead approving registration of a vehicle - the Act under which the organisation was established must be quoted.
- One of these:
- certificate of incorporation if incorporated as a company by Australian Securities and Investments Commission
- certificate of incorporation of association if established under State Incorporation Act.
Sporting clubs and non-profit organisations
A Certificate of Incorporation issued under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985.
Co-operative societies
A Certificate of Incorporation issued under the Cooperatives Act 1997.
State schools
Evidence is not required as Service SA staff are able to confirm the details of a state school through the Department for Education website.
Private schools
One of these:
- extract from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission website (ASIC)
- certificate of registration with ACN
- current extract of the company with ACN
- certificate of registration of a foreign company with Australian Registered Body Number.
If an extract from the ASIC website is provided and lists the current business address, a separate evidence of address document is not required.
Solicitors
A certificate of Incorporation issued under the Legal Practitioners Act 1981.
