Probationary drivers may have conditions on their licence including limits to the power of vehicles they may drive.
Restricted licences may also be issued to cover the use of certain vehicles such as mobile machinery, plant and equipment which is only used within the confines of a factory, depot or industrial complex. In special circumstances you may be exempt from gaining the minimum driving experience requirements for a specific class of driver's licence.
Probationary conditions
Probationary conditions may be applied to a driver's licence following licence disqualification.
Probationary conditions generally apply for 12 months, but may be longer in some instances.
The term probationary conditions will be prominently displayed on the front of the driver's licence with the conditions listed on the back.
If you are subject to probationary licence conditions you:
- must not drive a motor vehicle or attempt to put a motor vehicle in motion on a road while there is any concentration of alcohol in your blood or the presence of THC (Cannabis), methylamphetamine (Speed) or MDMA (ecstasy) in your blood or oral fluid (saliva)
- must carry your licence at all times while driving a motor vehicle
- must not incur two or more demerit points during the probationary licence period
- are not able to supervise the driving of a person with a learner's permit.

High powered vehicle restrictions
High powered vehicle restrictions apply:
- if you hold a provisional licence and are under 25
- if you obtained a P1 licence on, or after, 4 September 2010
- if you were disqualified and returned to driving on a P1 licence on, or after, 4 September 2010.
High powered vehicle restrictions do NOT apply:
- if you are 25 or older
- if you obtained your P1 or P2 licence before 4 September 2010
- if you have an exemption certificate.

Experience exemptions
In special circumstances you may be exempt from gaining the minimum driving experience requirements for a specific class of driver's licence.
Class Heavy Combination
Applicants for a class Heavy Combination licence who do not meet the minimum driving experience requirements (i.e have not held a class Medium Rigid or a Heavy Rigid for at least one year) may undertake an approved training in lieu of experience (TILE) course, provided they have held a class C driver's licence for at least two years.
Restricted licences and other exemptions
Restricted licences may also be issued to cover the use of certain vehicles such as mobile machinery, plant and equipment which is only used within the confines of a factory, depot or industrial complex and has an unladen mass or Gross Vehicle Mass that exceeds the class of licence held by the person (provided the person has been appropriately trained in the operation of the vehicle).
