Calculate renewal fee

A licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply if the licence has expired for more than 6 months.

What happens next

When you renew online, you can print a receipt and your temporary licence or have it sent to a nominated email address.

If you use the mySAGOV app, the new expiry date will be displayed on your digital licence immediately.

You should receive your licence card in the post within 3 weeks.

If you don't receive the licence card within 3 weeks phone Service SA on 13 10 84. If you don't contact Service SA within 30 days of renewing your licence, you may need to pay a replacement fee.

Reasons you can't renew online

You can't renew your licence online if you need a new photo.

Online renewal may not be available in some circumstances:

  • if your licence has expired by more than 5 years
  • you now need glasses when driving, the condition needs to be recorded on your licence
  • you no longer need glasses (when previously you did) you will need to take an eye test to have this condition removed from your licence.

Phone Service SA on 13 10 84 for advice on renewing your licence.

If you are disqualified, suspended or otherwise prevented from holding or obtaining a driver's licence, you will not be able to renew your licence.

Early or late licence renewal

Licence renewals paid before the expiry date, will commence the day after the existing expiry date.

A driver's licence is valid until midnight of the expiry date - eg if a licence is due to expire on the 26 June, the licence holder can drive up until midnight on the 26 June.

Expired licences up to 5 years can still be renewed online. If your licence has expired for more than 6 months, a licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply.

Concessions

If you are eligible for a licence concession and it has not been applied to your renewal notice check Registration and licence concessions for information on how to apply.

If you have a concession and it has been applied to your renewal notice, your concession will be validated during the renewal process.
