Basic Rider Safe course

The Basic Rider Safe course is a pre-licence training course that teaches the basic skills necessary for you to ride a motorcycle safely on the road.

The fee for the Basic Rider Safe course is $417.

Eligibility

To take part in a Basic Rider Safe course, you must have a current C class driver's licence or C class learner's permit. If you do not have either, you must first pass a theory test.

To pay for the Basic Rider Safe course you must meet one of these conditions, be:

• at least 17.5 years
• 17 years and hold a provisional licence
• 16 years if residing in a prescribed locality. You will be eligible for a restricted learner's permit and will only be able to ride for the following purposes:
  • to attend tertiary education, vocational education or training or within the course of tertiary education, vocational education or training
  • to attend tertiary education, vocational education or training or within the course of tertiary education, vocational education or training
  • for work
  • to participate in a sporting activity.

Booking a course

Pay for the Basic Rider Safe course by phoning Service SA on 13 10 84 (9 am to 5  pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) or at a Service SA centre.

Once payment has been made, phone 1800 018 300 (9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) with your receipt number to make your booking.

Course locations

Basic Rider Safe courses have 2 different session times that are available at 6 different locations;

• St Agnes
• Murray Bridge
• Millicent
• Barmera
• Port Pirie
• Whyalla

Session times

First session: 8:15 am – 12 pm

Second session: 12:30 pm – 4:15 pm.

What to bring

You cannot use your own motorcycle in the Basic Rider Safe course unless there are exceptional circumstances. A motorcycle will be provided.

You must bring the following items to participate otherwise you will need to make another booking:

• a fit for purpose, compliant helmet
• photographic and signature identification (such as a student ID card or driver's licence)
• appropriate clothing - long sleeved top, full length pants, enclosed shoes (no sandals, thongs or heels)
• course payment receipt.

What the course involves

The Basic Rider Safe training course consists of 2 half day sessions. During the course, you will learn basic motorcycle operating and manoeuvring skills in a safe, off road environment.

Day 1

The first day of training covers basic motorcycle control skills, including:

• riding in a straight line
• basic braking
• cornering
• gear shifting
• bike control theory.

If the instructor determines that you have not reached the practical standard during the day, you can be asked to repeat the session.

Day 2

The second day of training involves interacting with other motorcycles on the riding range and covers more advanced motorcycle control theory and traffic skills.

A practical skills assessment will be conducted at the end of the day.

If you fail the courses, you are allowed two additional attempts at no extra charge.

What happens next

After successfully completing the Basic Rider Safe course, you must present your endorsed 'Approval to Obtain a Learner's Permit' certificate at a Service SA centre within 12 months to obtain your learner's permit.

Failure to do so will result in you having to do the Basic Rider Safe course again.

You must hold a motorcycle learner's permit for a minimum period of 12 months, regardless of age and or whether a full licence is held.
