Advanced Rider Safe course

The Advanced Rider Safe course is a half-day training session that includes a practical assessment.

    Eligibility

    You can complete the Advanced Rider Safe course any time after being issued your R-Date learner's permit, but it is recommended that you hold your learner's permit for a minimum of 6 months before you attempt the course.

    An R-Date licence cannot be issued until you have held the learner's permit for 12 months.

    Booking a course

    Pay for the Advanced Rider Safe course by calling Service SA on 13 10 84 (9 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) or at any Service SA centre.

    Once payment has been made, phone 1800 018 300 (9 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) with your receipt number to make your booking.

    Course sessions

    Advanced Rider Safe courses have 2 different session times that are available at 6 different locations.

    First session: 8:15am – 12 pm.

    Second session: 12:30 pm – 4:15pm.

    What to bring

    You must bring the following items with you otherwise you cannot participate and will need to make another booking:

    • a fit for purpose, compliant helmet
    • current photo identification
    • a current learner's permit
    • course payment receipt.

    You may use your own motorbike in the advanced course, as long as it is registered, roadworthy, not modified and on the list of learner-approved motorcycles.

    If you do not wish to use your own, a motorcycle or scooter will be provided. However, particular types and models cannot be guaranteed.

    What the course involves

    The Advanced Rider Safe course is a half-day training session that includes a practical assessment.

    During the session, you will learn advanced bike control skills with emphasis placed on road riding skills and traction theory.

    If you fail the course, you are allowed two additional attempts at no extra charge.

    What happens next

    After successfully completing the Advanced Rider Safe, you will be issued a certificate of competency.

    Provided you have held your R-Date learners permit for over 12 months, present the certificate to any Service SA centre and apply for an R-Date licence.
