Employing an apprentice or trainee

Disputes, termination or variation

Apprenticeships and traineeships include a probationary period after which the training contract can be terminated only with the agreement of all parties.

Probationary period

All training contracts include a probationary period. This period varies according to the length of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

During the probationary period either party can withdraw from the contract but must inform Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services (TAS). TAS is responsible for regulating South Australia's traineeship and apprenticeship system.

An apprentice or a trainee cannot be dismissed once the probationary period has expired. The training contract can be transferred, suspended, terminated or varied with the agreement of all parties.

Visit making changes on the WorkReady website.

Termination and suspension

If you need help to resolve issues, disagreements or disputes with your apprentice or trainee visit resolving issues on the WorkReady website or contact TAS on 1800 673 097.

Transfer of training contract between employers

A training contract can be transferred from one employer to another provided all parties agree and TAS approves the application.

Visit changing employers on the WorkReady website.
