Interstate vehicle transfer - identity inspection tier 2

If a vehicle is from interstate or overseas, a one-off new construction or there is any other doubt to its history, you'll need to get a vehicle identity inspection (Tier 2) before applying for registration.

When vehicle identity inspections (Tier 2) are required

A vehicle identity inspection (Tier 2) is required if the vehicle:

  • was last registered interstate, unless you hold a current interstate registration certificate in exactly the same name as the intended South Australian registration - this includes vehicles that may have been registered in South Australia previously
  • is from overseas
  • registration (plate) number is unknown
  • was a commonwealth registered vehicle
  • has been registered in South Australia before, but the vehicle details (for example, engine number and vehicle identification number) do not match records, or the details of the vehicle are unknown
  • is a one-off new construction
  • is a new vehicle purchased interstate and is to be registered in SA
  • is a repaired written-off vehicle (see Tier 3 identity inspection 570.9 KB).

All vehicles driven to the inspection facility are required to have some form of current registration, either:

  • current South Australian or interstate registration
  • unregistered vehicle permit
  • trade plate (trade plate owner must have some financial interest in the vehicle).

When vehicles will not be inspected

Vehicles will not be inspected if on trailers or transported by other means. All vehicles must be driven into and out of the inspection shed.

Other country areas

Identity inspections (Tier 2) can be carried out by South Australia police in some country areas. If you live more than a 40 kilometre radius from the Adelaide GPO and your local police station is also outside of the of the 40 kilometre radius, you will need to contact your local police station to arrange an appointment for the vehicle to be inspected.

Country police will only conduct identity inspections where:

  • you are a resident in that police response area
  • you can supply proof of vehicle ownership.

Find country police station address and contact details on the SA Police website.

After the inspection

After the inspection, you will be issued a vehicle identity inspection report which is required when registering the vehicle. The certificate is valid for three calendar months from the time of the inspection.

To register the vehicle take the report to a Service SA customer service centre.
