Apprenticeships and traineeships

Australian apprenticeships and traineeships combine study, training and employment with the aim of gaining a nationally recognised qualification from a wide range of business and industry sectors.

A training contract is agreed between the employer, apprentice or trainee and their parent or guardian if aged under 18. This outlines the qualification to be undertaken and obligations of relevant parties. A training plan is also agreed between these parties and their chosen registered training organisation (RTO). This outlines how the qualification will be delivered

Anyone of working age can undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship on a full-time or part-time basis. High school students can undertake a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

The Australian apprenticeships brochure provides information on:

  • pay rates
  • duration of apprenticeships and traineeships
  • finding an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • financial assistance.
