Vehicle registration

Short-term unregistered vehicle permit

A short-term unregistered vehicle permit allows an unregistered vehicle to be driven on the road for a special reason, such as a vehicle inspection, repairs, car event or rally.

Before you begin

You will need the following information:

  • number plate
  • vehicle identification number (VIN) or engine number
  • type and make of vehicle
  • reason for the permit
  • the route and specific time to be driven.

How to apply

Some permits can't be issued online - eg left hand drive vehicle permits that require a left hand drive exemption certificate and defected vehicles with a lift and tow restriction. Otherwise, you need a mySA GOV account to apply.

In person

Complete an application form (138.0 KB PDF) and take it to a Service SA customer service centre along with the appropriate fee.

  • The permit must be attached to the windscreen of your vehicle, or if the vehicle does not have a windscreen, the permit must be carried with you while driving the vehicle.
  • Permits may be granted for a maximum of three days but are usually only issued for as long as necessary - eg one day for a vehicle inspection.
  • No refund is paid if a permit is cancelled.
