If you are visiting from interstate, or have recently moved here permanently, please make sure you are driving legally.
Vehicles registered in another Australian State or Territory can be driven in South Australia. People visiting temporarily can drive vehicles registered interstate without having to register them in South Australia.
If you are required to display a label in your State or Territory of residence and your interstate vehicle registration label has been lost or destroyed, you may need to apply for an interstate visitor's permit so you can drive your vehicle here while waiting for the replacement label to arrive.
To complete an application for an interstate visitor's permit at a Service SA customer service centre you will need to provide one of these:
- evidence that the vehicle is registered interstate
- a permit from interstate that authorises the vehicle's use in South Australia and shows that it is covered by third party insurance.
You must apply for a licence and register your vehicle in South Australia within three months of becoming a permanent resident.
Registering an interstate vehicle
Present your current interstate registration certificate to a Service SA customer service centre. The name on the certificate must be exactly the same as the intended South Australian registration.
If you do not have an interstate registration certificate the vehicle must have a vehicle inspection to confirm the correct identity of the vehicle, and stamp duty will be payable as well as the applicable registration fees.
If the vehicle needs to be inspected the following information must be provided to a Service SA customer service centre after the inspection:
- your completed application for registration and third party insurance and your inspection certificate
- evidence of identity if you have not previously been issued a licence or registered a vehicle in South Australia.
Refund of previous registration
After you have registered the vehicle in South Australia you can apply to the state where the vehicle was previously registered for a refund of registration fees.
