Stamp duty when buying a vehicle

Stamp duty is payable when registering a new vehicle or transferring the registration of a secondhand vehicle into your name. The payment is collected by Service SA on behalf of Revenue SA.

Stamp duty is calculated based on:

  • the purchase price or value of the vehicle, whichever is higher
  • if the vehicle is classified as commercial - eg ute, van or non-commercial - eg sedan, station wagon.
